The Physical Development Of A Human Being Essays - Endocrine System
The Physical Development Of A Human Being Essays - Endocrine System The Physical Development Of A Human Being Catherine The Physical Development of a Human Being As defined in Berk's, Development Through the Lifespan, physical development is changes in body size, proportions, appearance, and the functioning of various body systems; brain development; perceptual and motor capacities; and physical health. The physical development of a human being is the unique because of all of the visible changes that every human being goes through. Physical growth results from a continuous and complex interplay between heredity and environment. Humans begin to develop before they are out of their mother's womb. After conception, the zygote is what I consider the earliest development of the human being. The period of the zygote is about two weeks long. The zygote then becomes an embryo. The period of the embryo lasts from the second week on through the eighth week of pregnancy. The embryo then changes to form the fetus. The period of the fetus is from the ninth week until the end of the pregnancy. The zygote, embryo, and fetus all form in the first trimester o r pregnancy. By the third trimester, the fetus is around seven and half pounds. I weighed about eight and one fourth pounds when I was born. My mother still tells me that when I was born I had enough hair to braid. She says all my hair gave her horrible heartburn. Luckily she did not smoke or use any drugs or alcohol during the time that she was pregnant with me. All of these things can do serious harm to the fetus. Boys tend to be a little longer and heavier than girls at birth. Babies change faster than older humans do. The human body grows and enlarges at the most rapid rate during the first two years. Weight is gained steadily during this time. By nine months baby fat has usually arrived and is at its highest level. This helps babies to maintain a constant body temperature. Babies become thinner during the second year. This held true for me from what I have seen of my baby pictures. Babies do not tend to be very muscular or coordinated. The child grows and size increases, and different parts of the body grow at different speeds. There are two growth patterns that represent this. The first is called the cephalocaudal trend. During this phase the head takes up a fourth of the body and the legs take up a third. The second pattern is called the proximodistal trend. This is when the growth proceeds from the center of the body outward. During infancy, the arms and legs continue to grow ahead of the hands and feet. The brain is closer to adult size at birth than any other body part on a baby. When a child reaches the age of two, the brain is already at seventy percent of its adult weight. Some of the factors that influence this early growth are heredity, nutrition, and emotional well-being. Over the first year of life, babies begin to organize sounds into complex patterns. During the second half of the first year, babies begin focusing on larger speech units. These larger units are critical to figuring out the meaning of what babies hear. By nine months babies begin to listen to speech for much longer periods of time, and they begin to perceive it on wordlike segments. A childs vision goes through some extensive changes during the first seven to eight months of the childs life. The childs vision improves a great deal throughout the first year. When a child begins some form of independent movement, they begin to better understand depth perception. When an adult moves around on his/her own, they too have a better feel for landmarks and what is around them. The rapid growth in body size that takes place in infancy begins to slow down in early childhood. During this time boys still tend to be a little larger than girls are. When I was this age, all of my friends were boys, and they were a little larger than I was. Increasing control of the childs hands and fingers lead to a huge improvement in the fine motor skills. Their drawings become more and more

How disasters have an effect on the world at large Essay
How disasters have an effect on the world at large - Essay Example These disasters regardless of how small they may be, also affect adversely both the statesââ¬â¢ and peopleââ¬â¢s economic statuses. Since, their destructive power normally extends to peopleââ¬â¢s investments besides residential properties, hence impoverishing natives (Donald & Hyndman 97). This is because, in their regions, there may be inadequate facilities meant to compensate them to rebound to their former lives (Donald & Hyndman 99). This is apparent in developing states, where after any disasterââ¬â¢s occurrence; the affected victims do not get any aid meant to regain their former statuses economically. Studies contend that, some of the disasters interfere with ecosystemsââ¬â¢ array. This is evident with aquatic life where some species on sensing threats in their environments migrate to other regions. Hence, desert their regions, whereby they create imbalance and head to other environments that may be not conducive for their survival. Consequently, this yields to some speciesââ¬â¢ extinction because they do not possess the necessary mechanisms meant to survive in their new surroundings. Besides, they also affect climatic patterns that in turn affect humanity severely (Donald & Hyndman 291). Presently, world authorities are mobilizing resources to curb global warming that has emanated from natural disasters besides humanityââ¬â¢s activities contribution to the same. These encompass natural disasters like volcano eruptions, which emit obnoxious gases like HFSs and Cl, which destroy the ozone layer (Donald & Hyndman 196). This affects global climatic patterns besides leading to certain diseases that result from excess exposure to sunlight, for illustration, skin

Todays business environment includes many frauds and unfair trade practices. This is often happens due to the lack of integrity, ethics and core values. In this article the need for integrity ethics and core values are critically analysed and a brief study has been made. Integrityà is a concept ofà consistencyà of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. In ethics, integrity is regarded as theà honestyà andà truthfulnessà orà accuracyà of ones actions. Integrity can be regarded as the opposite of hypocrisy,à in that it regards internal consistency as a virtue, and suggests that parties holding apparently conflicting values should account for the discrepancy or alter their beliefs. Integrity means adherenceà toà moralà andà ethicalà principles;à soundnessà of moralà character;à honesty. Integrity as a physical description means unimpaired and complete. Integrity in a person implies honesty, fairness, ethics, and moral character. Integrity refers to wholeness as a human being. It means that you have developed into a person whose thoughts, words, and actions are congruent, and therefore do not conflict with each other. In the exercise of your free will, your decisions reveal any de gree of disorder in your soul. To the extent that you have brought every aspect of yourself into harmony, you can be trusted to live according to your convictions. Although some contend that these convictions are completely individual and can vary widely from person to person, this would mean that even selfish or cowardly people could be said to have integrity.à Like persons companies also have integrity. Business is much related to integrity. In business integrity should be maintained. The business should be simple, moral and accountable. It should protect the interest of all stake holders. Ethics is the science of morality or the systematic study of moral rules and principles. The term morality refers to rules which prescribe the way people ought to behave and principles which reflect what is ultimately good or desirable for human beings. Ethics in business is the one that can regulate the people who are working together. This is also what determined the morale in the business or the company so that when ethical issues arise, the business will not be in chaos. This is something that will control the overall attitude of the business. It applies to all aspects of business conduct and is relevant to the conduct of individuals and entire organizations. Business ethics is a form of the art of applied ethics that examines ethical rules and principles within a commercial context, the various moral or ethical problems that can arise in a business setting and any special duties or obligations that apply to persons who are engaged in commerce. Business ethics can be both a norma tive and a descriptive discipline. As a corporate practice and a career specialisation, the field is primarily normative. In academia descriptive approaches are also taken. The range and quantity of business ethical issues reflects the degree to which business is perceived to be at odds with non-economic social values. Historically, interest in business ethics accelerated dramatically during the 1980s and 1990s, both within major corporations and within academia. For example, today most major corporate websites lay emphasis on commitment to promoting non-economic social values under a variety of headings. In some cases, corporations have redefined their core values in the light of business ethical considerations. Following ethics is the best way of doing business and serving society. Every business should have ethics. Its an important value of every business. A business should protect the interest of all its stakeholders. A business uses the resources of society. So it must have a responsibility towards the society. The importance of ethics in business can be understood by the fact that ethical businesses tend to make much more profits than the others. An organization, which is well-known for its ethical practices, creates a goodwill for itself in the market.à In simple terms, core values are set conceptions that you decide to follow in your life or in a business. They give an understanding to other entities around you about your way of thinking and living. Core values can be used in our daily lives, for living a clean and transparent life and coordinating with other people. Nowadays, core values are the most crucial aspects of any successful business, as they contribute a lot in the growth of a company. Core values are the very significant components of the identity of any business. They are specialized standards set by a company regarding the method of its functioning, decision making, problem solving, and customer service. The main aim of any company is to attract profit, which can easily be done if clients and customers are impressed by the satisfaction provided to them from the services. And for letting the clients know about the quality of the business, core values of a company essentially have to be set.à There are many advantages that core values bring. The primary benefit of core values is that they let clients and potential consumers know what the company is all about, and clarifies the identity of the company. Core values are points to be considered for maintaining proper corporate relations with the media, customers, public, and other business entities. Core values also aid companies in the decision-making processes. If a company has to take an important decision, it adheres to and considers its core values, after which it goes ahead with the appropriate decision. Core values play an important role in other entities about the goals and motives of the company. In business terms, core values are the rules, regulations, and guidelines that are to be considered for the smooth running of the business. A core value can be anything that the company is best in, such as commitment to providing maximum customer service and satisfaction.à Conclusion Todays business environment faces many problems such as exploitation of resources, fraud, unfair trade practices etc. The basic reasons behind these problems are lack of integrity, ethics and core values. Ethics, integrity and core values helps to protect the interest of all stake holders, increase the goodwill of the company, earn more profit and minimize the regulations. So ethics, integrity and core values are essential for the survival of a company. So every organisation should have these qualities. This will bring many advantages to the organisations and will help to increase the trust of society and government in the company.

The Odyssey, Analysis of Hubris, Ate, Nemesis
The Cycle That Continues Today Many people get off a plane and think that was a terrible trip because the security lines were long, the flight was delayed, and the food was terrible. Odysseusââ¬â¢ journey is guaranteed to be a hundred times harder. He spends ten years trying to get home after the Trojan War and has a series of mishaps along the way. Homer, who was a famous bard in Ancient Greece, tells Odysseusââ¬â¢ story in the epic poem, the Odyssey. Throughout the poem, many characters go through the cycle of Hubris, Ate, and Nemesis, causing hardships that never needed to happen, and their mistakes teach readers lessons. The cycle begins when a character is arrogant, acts upon it, and then gets punished based on their actions. Iros, a beggar, decides that he doesnââ¬â¢t want to share the space with Odysseus, who he thinks is a weak old beggar, but he pays in the end. The suitor, Antinoos, leads the pack of men taking over Odysseusââ¬â¢ castle; he dies for his disloyal actions toward the king. Finally, Odysseusââ¬â¢ plan to return to Ithaka is slowed by over eight years after he angers Poseidonââ¬â¢s son by being arrogant. Iros isnââ¬â¢t closely related to the suitors or Odysseus but he still goes through the cycle.Irosââ¬â¢ experience with the cycle results in a loss of food and shelter after he commits his Ate. Iros meets an old and weak beggar whom he thinks he is better than because he is much younger and looks stronger. Then, during his Ate, he challenges the beggar to a fight for the castleââ¬Ës Great Hall. In his Nemesis, the beggar, who is actually Odysseus, breaks his jaw in the first punch and then hurts his leg with just a quick kick. Readers can learn through Iros not to judge others by their looks or age. Before the fight, Iros encourages the suitors to pay attention and cheer him on.Iros tells Odysseus, ââ¬Å"Clear-out grandfather or be hauled by the ankle bone. See them all giving me the wink? That means, ââ¬ËGo o n and drag him out! ââ¬â¢ I hate to do it. Up with you! Or would you like a fist fightâ⬠(Fitzgerald 335). When Iros commits his Ate, he angers Odysseus by insulting him. This shows that people should learn to share, and not take advantage of elders. The cycle continues throughout the story in Antinoos. During Odysseusââ¬â¢ absence, Antinoos thinks he can take over the castle and his wife; this causes him to lose his life. When Odysseus doesnââ¬â¢t return from the Trojan War, people begin to question if he is alive or not. Antinoos and the other suitors decide to take advantage of this opportunity by invading the castle. His Ate is committed when they drink Odysseusââ¬â¢ wine, slaughter his cattle, and mistreat Penelope, Odysseusââ¬â¢ wife, and the other servants. When Odysseus finally returns, still disguised as a beggar, Antinoos throws a chair at him. In the end, his nemesis is being the first suitor to die, since he is the leader of the pack.Readers can learn not to take advantage of others or take what has not been earned. Odysseus and his most trusted servants lock the suitors in the Great Hall, in order to try to kill them. Homer writes, ââ¬Å"He drew the cruel head of an arrow for Antinoos just as the young man leaned to lift his beautiful cupâ⬠¦ Odysseus hit him under the chin and punched up the feather through his throatâ⬠(Fitzgerald 409). Antinoosââ¬â¢ Nemesis is death at the hand of Odysseusââ¬â¢ arrow, and it is revenge for taking over his castle. Although Odysseus causes the Nemesis of Iros and Antinoos, he experiences the cycle himself.Even though Odysseus is considered the hero of the poem, he still goes through the Hubris, Ate, and Nemesis cycle. In order to escape Polyphemosââ¬â¢ cave, where he is trapped, Odysseus blinds the Kyklopes. After escaping the cave, he boards the ship and with arrogance reveals his name and where he is from. In anger, the Kyklopes asks his dad, Poseidon, to punish Odysseus by making it almost impossible to return to Ithaka, Odysseusââ¬â¢ home, this is his Nemesis. The lesson the reader can learn is that boasting can get in the way of the ultimate goal. Bragging makes others even more mad, and they try to get revenge.Odysseus couldnââ¬â¢t just leave quietly. Polyphemos tells his dad everything he knows and how to punish him. He yells, ââ¬Å"Oh hear me lord, blue girdler of the islands, if I am thine indeed, and thou art father: grant that Odysseus, raider of cities, never see his home again. Laertes son, I mean, who kept his hall on Ithaka. Should destiny intend that he shall see his roof again among his family in his fathers land, far be that day, and dark the years between. Let him lose all companions, and return under strange sail to biter days homeâ⬠(Fitzgerald 161). Polyphemos determines Odysseusââ¬â¢ fate.It takes ten years for him to return home finally. All of his crew dies, and when he arrives, he finds that suitors have invaded h is castle. The lessons learned from Odysseusââ¬â¢ mistakes are important for people today, not only for people the past. Arrogance canââ¬â¢t always be controlled, and still today self-importance gets in the way of peoples life goals. The Odysseyââ¬â¢s exciting adventure teaches lessons about life and human nature. None of the characters are perfect, so this allows people to relate to their personalities and mistakes, keeping this poem popular.

Celia, a Slave Book Review Essay
Celia, A Slave is a story that takes many different historical facts from the era that the book was placed in, and uses a slave named Celiaââ¬â¢s story to tie them all in and show how these events that didnââ¬â¢t directly affect her, would indirectly affect her, and the other slaves in this time as well. The author, Melton A. McLaurin, not only wrote the story of Celia in his book, but he also focused on other historical events taking place at the time to support his thesis that Celiaââ¬â¢s case demonstrated what was happening on a global scale. He used facts such as the slave revolts in Haiti and the Dred Scott decision to make a case on why things were so hard for slaves at the time in the United States, and how they affected Celia, and her case. McLaurin also used different people and organizations like the Border Ruffians and the Massachusetts Emigrant Aid company to show the culture and society of the time and place of Celiaââ¬â¢s story. The slave revolts in Haiti would indirectly affect Celia. Because the slaves revolted in Haiti, and actually won, it came as a wakeup call to the southerners. They knew that the slave population outnumbered their own, and if they revolted against them, they werenââ¬â¢t sure if they would be able to stop them. This made the Southerners even stricter when it came to slavery, and less lenient when it came to any types of escapes, or breaking of laws. This made it impossible for the jury in Celiaââ¬â¢s murder case to believe that it she truly killed him in self-defense. The Dred Scott decision would directly affect her, because of the fact that the decision was still valid, and she, along with all the other slaves, werenââ¬â¢t protected by the U.S. Constitution, and were not considered U.S. citizens. This ruled out any argument that John Jameson, and the rest of her defense, would come up with arguing her constitutional rights. Instead, they brought up things like, how it wouldââ¬â¢ve been possible for her to kill a man of his size, and how it was possible that the body wouldââ¬â¢ve been completely disseminated in a fire in a matter of hours. Thomas Shoatman also tried to testify that after she striked Newsom the first time ââ¬Å"he threw his hand up to catch herâ⬠, but the judge sustained prosecution objections to the defendants testimonies, because a majority of the jury and the judge himself were all slave owners. This even came as a problem for John Jameson at first, because he was defending a slave when he had some himself. The t hing that really allowed him to relate to Celia though, was the fact that he had a daughter, and he wouldnââ¬â¢t have wanted the same injustice fall on her if the roles were reversed. The Border Ruffians showed the culture and society of the time in Missouri. The border ruffians would cross over into Kansas and vote for all things pro slavery related, and would beat Kansas citizens into voting for pro slavery as well. This was an example of the people that resided in Missouri, and how intent they were on making slavery legal in as many states as possible. The Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Company also showed the culture of the time, but from the aspect of people who didnââ¬â¢t want slavery. The company took advantage of the Kansas Nebraska Act to try and get anti-slavery supporters to settle in the Kansas territory, to try and make it a slave free state. The company was crucial in settling Kansas, and making it a free slave state. The book was a good read, though a bit repetitive at times, and educated the reader about different issues at the time of Celiaââ¬â¢s case that would affect her, and also affected slaves lives in at the time. It also would educate the reader to what it was like to live in the time of Celiaââ¬â¢s case, and get an insight on what it was like for her, and others.

Through rigorous research and study, we students as researchers have been able to consolidate a portrait of leadership centralizing hounding budget deficit and economy downfall. Beating the odds is composed of many issues but we concentrated on the issu e of budgeting, governance and the tenth agenda. President Arroyo presided over 34 quarters of uninterrupted growth in the Philippine economy, drastically cut the deficit and set the basis of financial stability through the global financial crunch of 2009. The budget was in a dismal state when she first took over the reins of power in 2001. Revenues were low, debt was high, and inefficiencies and corruption drained the countryââ¬â¢s coffers. She took steps to ensure the proper ranking of government expenditures and allocations and implemented tax reforms to improve collections. By supporting and pushing the revenue and customs agencies to ferret out tax evaders, she stepped up revenue collections. Working closely with Congress, she pushed for the approval of fiscal reforms to further increase revenues and balances the budget. Her actions sustained the economy as it ushered in a period of sustained growth that has shielded the Philippines from global financial upheavals. Inh eritance of GMA to the motherland, the positive side (Strength) President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in her 112th Independence Day speech, said she will leave the Filipino people a legacy of a strong and stable economy. In her speech at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park, her last as head of state, the outgoing President said her reform programs ââ¬Å"now offer more economic opportunities and support the aspirations of our heroes who all dreamt of a national vision of attaining prosperity, freedom and justice for all. Since the start of her administration in 2001, the President said poverty alleviation became the centerpiece of her 10-point agenda the so-called BEAT THE ODDS. BEAT THE ODDS stands for a Balanced budget; Education for all; Automated elections; Transportation and digital infrastructure; Terminate hostilities with the MILF and NPA; Heal the wounds of EDSAs I, II and III; Electricity and water for all; Opportunities for livelihood and ten million jobs; Decongestion of Metro Manila; Develop Subic-Clark. She said the implementation of these pro-poor programs were all achieved through economic reforms that resulted to a lower budget deficit, better economic growth and generated much needed funds to finance vital infrastructure projects such ports, seaports, airports, bridges, highway networks and the roll-on roll-off ferry system. The President said the May 2010 automated elections also delivered the most modern and open election that will lastingly change the face of Philippine politics such as the earliest proclamation in history of the President and Vice President. In the course of her speech, beneficiaries thanked the President for her numerous programs. Mrs. Arroyo presented them one-by-one and then talked to them in their dialect, and then cited her administrations achievements in the last 9 years. Among these achievements are on transportation, job creation, expanding business opportunities, education, addressing the Communist and Moro rebellion, implementation of the May 10 automated elections, generating more electricity and improving water supply, developing the call center industry, and the transformation of the Subic-Clark economic zone. EVALUATION (this part.. gagawa ntin.. if ntapos na ntin ung mga primary parts.. mdali na lang toh) Expressway drives Subic-Clark-Tarlac growth Manila Bulletin (The National Leading Newspaper) May 30, 2010 The full operation of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway has been cited as one of the major factors that have driven investments into the countryââ¬â¢s premier free ports Clark Freeport Zone and Subic Bay Freeport Zone, a special report said. The 93. 77 kilometer SCTEX was cited as a legacy of the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Since its full operations in 2008 , the 93. 7-km expressway was cited as the ââ¬Å"key to the evolution of the mega logistics hub within the parts of the Subic-Clark corridor,â⬠a special report on the Subic Freeport said. Edgardo Pamintuan former chairman of the Subic-Clark Alliance for Development (SCAD) earlier said that the Subic-Clark corridor has been expanded with the extension of the expressway to Tarlac. ââ¬Å"One of the features of the SCAD corridor framework is the production-oriented logistics corridor with three equidistant hubsââ¬âSubic, with its sea port as the sea hub, DMIA as the air hub, and Tarlac as the land hub,â⬠Pamintuan said. The same report said that Subic-Clark-Tarlac makes Asiaââ¬â¢s largest logistics hub and this has been made possible by the construction and completion of SCTEX. At least 150,000 jobs have been created by businesses along the Subic-Clark corridor alone. Subic Bay had been earlier transformed as a bustling seaport that has drawn investments from glob al players which wanted to cash in on the highly developed cargo handling and seaport management capabilities and facilities of the former Naval base of the United States. Clark has now become a magnet for investments in light industries, taking advantage of the presence of the entire expanse of airport facilities in this former US military base. Tarlac, with its vast agricultural and industrial areas, completes the ââ¬Å"troikaâ⬠of major development forces in Central Luzon. All three hubs require a road infrastructure that is ideal for cargo movement from Subic Bay and Clark to many destinations, and that is where SCTEX ââ¬Å"fits into the pictureââ¬âto expand and enhance the cargo reach our clients on time,â⬠said one locator. Overall, SCTEX has positive impact on the economic growth of the entire Central Luzon region, which the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) said is third highest in regional gross domestic product, next to the National Capit al Region and Calabarzon. Central Luzon contributes 40% to the countryââ¬â¢s Services sector, 35% to the agricultural sector, and 24. 5% to agricultural output. Subic Bay Freeport, which boasts of two container terminals with a combined capacity of 600,000 TEUs, is expected to make full use of the modern SCTEX. Subic Bay Freeport has been positioned as ââ¬Å"the maritime gateway for Luzon. Clark Freeport is home to the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) and its burgeoning businesses in business process outsourcing (BPO), health and wellness, logistics and port development, food, agribusiness, tourist destination and facilities development and ancillary services and products to locators within the industrial estates.
